User tags

A feature we're currently using intensively in Rocket Chat is the label. It enables to know who is a partner of the company, who is a newbie, and who is in which group. In our environment I guess the component should be able to retrieve labels in the LDAP directory.

I think this information can be saved in the user's vCard.

There is a ROLE field in the vCard that can perhaps be abused for this.

It would be quite useful also to know from which organization are people from (ex : Happy Dev Paris, The Walking Nerds, Happy Dev Nantes).

I think so, that depends on the server implementation.

Can a user have multiple roles? If so, I guess that could correspond to our use.

I assume you can just have a comma separated list of values, or otherwise multiple role fields. Something to look into.

I asked about LDAP and VCard support in the Prosody and OpenFire chatrooms.

OpenFire apparently also supports it. Prosody supports it, but via a community module and maintenance and support is unclear.

I'm not sure about Ejabberd.

In choosing an XMPP server we might have to try out multiple options and settle on the best.

Excellent. Thank you for this research ! From what I remember, Ejabberd also has a plugin for this but... let me find it back.

Thanks @jcbrand . It makes it way clearer.

In our business case, I think people will set tags directly on the LDAP application. So here we're only talking about displaying the tags close to the user name.
